Description

As part of Praxis der Forschung / Research Practice you will learn how to carry out scientific projects – this includes:

how to engage with scientific and researchtopics
how to collaborate in scientific projects and teams
how to present scientific results
how to write scientific publications

A more detailed description of the module contents, the workload and the examination formats in the four modules can be found here as well as in the module handbook. Current information, such as project topics and dates, is announced at the beginning of each semester on this website and in an information session, usually in the first week of the semester.

Praxis der Forschung/Research Practice (PdF/RP) is a different type of course at KIT in the Master's programme in Computer Science. Here you have the unique chance to experience research up close during your studies. In PdF/RP you, as a student, independently carry out a scientific research project at one of the participating institutes and engage with a challenging scientific question – usually as part of real ongoing research.

Research Practice provides ideal preparation for your
future career in academia (competence: scientific working) or industry (competence: project work) and can serve as preliminary subject-related work for a subsequent Master's thesis. PdF/RP is mainly suitable for Master's students in their first year. Bachelor students in their final year may participate if they have the required prior knowledge.

As a participant in PdF/RP you will work over a
period of two semesters intensively and continuously on
a concrete research topic, supervised and coached by
research staff. This is a lot of work, but
in return, you will also receive a total of 24 ECTS points, which consist of lecture (min. 5 credit points (LP)), seminar (min. 3 LP), practical (min. 3 LP) and keycompentence points (4 LP).

The exact distribution of the different points depends on the project
and will be decided by the examiner at the start of the course. In addition to the project work, accompanying teaching
events are part of PdF/RP, partly provided by the House of Competence (HoC), which introduce scientific, project-oriented working. Here you will learn important methodological skills and essential
factual knowledge and apply these in the practical part within the team.

Praxis der Forschung gave me, like no other course, insights into the everyday life of research. Publications resulting from Praxis der Forschung / Research Practice

Since the start of the Master's module PdF/RP an impressive number of scientific papers have been published which are partly or fully based on the results of student projects.

Praxis der Forschung as a Research Project

From 2012 until 2021, wihtin the “Lehre hoch Forschung” project and the successor “Lehre hoch Forschung PLUS”, the higher-education didactic support acted as an enabler and quality driver for the “Praxis der Forschung” format. It provided evidence-based design guidelines, teaching toolkits, and assessment rubrics; trained instructors and tutors in inquiry-based teaching; and advised on curricular integration and workload/assessment alignment. Through pilots and evaluation, it identified success factors and barriers, iteratively refined milestones and rubrics, and documented good practices for scaling across disciplines. This combination of capacity building, resources, and impact evaluation helped embed research-based learning sustainably in the curriculum.

Campustage „Lehre<sup>Forschung</sup>“ 2020

Das Teilprojekt "Lehre^Forschung-PLUS – Problemorientierte, forschungsorientierte und interdisziplinäre Lehre in der Informatik", im Rahmen dessen auch "Praxis der Forschung" realisiert wird, wurde am 16.10.2020 in einem Workshop auf den Campustagen „Lehre^Forschung“ vorgestellt und diskutiert. Die Aufzeichnung der Präsentationen hierzu – inklusive Kurzinterviews mit ehemaligen teilnehmenden Studierenden – ist nun in der Videoserie Campustage 2020 „Lehre^Forschung-PLUS“ veröffentlicht und online abrufbar.

"Praxis der Forschung" an der DGHD-Jahrestagung und am Forum für Lehre 2018

"Praxis der Forschung" wurde am 01.03.2018 in der „Lehre^Forschung-PLUS“-Postersession der DGHD-Jahrestagung mit einem Poster vorgestellt. Parallel hierzu wurden auch Poster zu weiteren Arbeiten im Rahmen des Vorhabens „Lehre^Forschung-PLUS“ präsentiert.
Des Weiteren wurde "Praxis der Forschung" am 06.11.2018 in der Posterausstellung von "Best-Practice"-Lehr-/Lernprojekten beim Forum für Lehre vorgestellt. Das Forum für Lehre wurde mit der Zielsetzung eines multiperspektivischen kollegialen Austauschs über Lehre und Lernen am KIT ausgerichtet.

"Praxis der Forschung" am Campustag 2016

"Praxis der Forschung" wurde am 14.10.2016 auf dem Campustag „Lehre^Forschung“ mit einem Poster vorgestellt und als eines der "Best-Practice" Beispiele präsentiert.

Zudem wurden die "Praxis der Forschung"-Projekte von Julien Hoffmann und Matthias Plappert auf dem Campustag ausgezeichnet.
